There are ways of treating panic attacks, anxiety disorder, and other nervous personality problems. Usually, Psychiatrists (not psychologists) will prescribe medicine. This, to me, treats the symptoms and not the underlying cause of your attacks. Other ways are the “paper bag method”, in which an individual suffering from a panic attack will breathe into a paper bag to keep from hyperventilating. This type of treatment is mainly a visualization--visualizing the bag growing bigger and smaller helps a person to slow down his or her breathing. Learn how here. The only way, in my honest opinion, to truly solve your anxiety problem is with what some psychologists call “self-image reinvention”. This involves either professional or self-directed therapy. I, myself, used the self-directed method in which I delved down into my thoughts and beliefs and “reinvented” the thoughts and beliefs with lead to my anxiety.I also used a psycho-cybernetic technique which communicates to the subconscious of my mind. It sounds odd-it kind of is. However scientifically, we consciously use only around 10% of our brain. The rest is reserved for other things such as breathing, keeping your heart beating, etc. There is a larger part, however, that directs you subconsciously--which in the end is who you truly are. It is a part that we can learn to control with the right practice and the right techniques. I repeated the phrase “I am the type of person that is strong, confident, charismatic, and outspoken” several times a day every day.The phrase, “I am the type of person…” symbolizes a core belief about oneself. At the time I wasn’t a strong confident individual--today, I am a stronger, more confident, more charismatic, and an outspoken individual. At least, I am more so now than I was then. That simply saying something over and over again can make that something come true is a strange and bizarre claim. However it is true. It is not simple “positive thinking” that will get you to your goals. It’s “active thinking” that does the trick. It is taking responsibility for your thoughts and actions which will make you better--not running away with medications, drugs, alcohol, or other self-destructive modes of relief.
